In 2000 Ford bought Land Rover from BMW. Development of the Discovery 3 and Range Rover Sport was already underway and the 2.7Tdv6 (Lion) engine was to be the chosen power unit.
In 2004 Discovery 3 was launched which meant that only Defender had the Td5 engine and as I already stated this was an expensive unit to produce. The other significant factor was that it was built by Power Train Projects and not Land Rover themselves, and this was still under BMW ownership.
Ford had no choice but to replace the power unit for purely economic reason and they chose the Duratorq ZSD-424 (built in Dagenham) and Getrag MT82 (built in Liverpool).
