The simple answer is that they are different.

The more fun answer is that on the 1974/1975 RRC it would be a chassis number for example 35500001A but after 1979 Land Rover changed to the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) so a 1986 RRC would be for example SALLHAMV7CA000001

Neither relate directly to the engine number however in the VIN number the 8th digit does explain which engine should be fitted so in the example above the V is a 3.5 Carburettor whilst M would signify a 3.9 Fuel Injected unit.
