The 2.2 Diesel Freelander 2 is pretty reliable, bearing in mind it's coming up for it's 7th birthday, yes chaps it's nearly 7 years since introduction in 2006.
Older ones leak oil, (well I never

, I would never have guessed

) they leak between the gearbox and transfer box which requires the gearbox to come off and the carter pan and carter pan extension case leaks oil along the rear of the block just under the right hand front drive shaft.
Rear brake pads wear much more than fronts and the rear handbrake cables split and rust.
Early EGR valves, exhaust manifolds and turbos used to leak exhaust gasses.
Rear differentials (not the Haldex unit) tend to wear the front pinion bearing which is not serviceable and will give a high pitched whine when driving, this is not to be confused with a constant rumble which is normally the rear tyres gekupped and you can feel them.
Ones with Terrain Response are better than ones without, the eD4 (two wheel drive) is a waste of space.
Very early ones weren't fitted with roet filters, they are better than the ones that are. There are several problems with the veschildruksensor and the roet filter itself as well as the oil level sensor and oil quality sensor. They are a pain in the bum.
Electrics and Electronics are reliable (bugger me we got something right).
There is a shed load of software updates and service actions so a dealer service or documented check-able service history is a must.
For the rest, personally, I think it's a brilliant vehicle and a very pleasant drive, and despite what I have written above I have seen some very well looked after vehicles that have none of the above and have seen some later vehicles that are complete dogs so check very carefully.
