... the end of the latch cable has broken off and you will need a new one, part number LR017470.
Now the fun part, as it is a common problem we used to hold competitions to see how fast you could get the rear door open to replace it.
The rules are simple :
- you are not allowed to damage any interior trim
- choose up to 4 tools
- the clock starts ticking when you enter the vehicle from the rear door.
- the clock stops when you open the upper tailgate.
My best time was 1 minute 58 seconds.
It's actually one of my favourite jobs.
So here's how:
You will need
- a broad flat bladed screwdriver
- a smaller flat bladed screwdriver
- a pair of long nosed pliers, preferably the bent ones , telefoon tang i believe you call them
- a sticking plaster
Get into the back load space.
Look where the plastic trim on the lower tailgate follows the line of the window and at the highest point where it starts to curve downwards.
Insert the large screwdriver here and prise the trim upwards and the bekleding downwards until it pops out.
Place the smaller screwdriver into this hole to keep the bekleding from going back in.
Move the large bladed screwdriver to the left and repeat.
You can now pull the bekleding away about 3cms from the top of the tailgate.
Now reach down slightly to the left of the centre line until you find a rectangular recess in the foam inner liner
Press hard until you go through the foam liner.
You can now feel the actuator housing.
Now feel to the right of the housing until you find the cable exiting from the housing.
You now have to press the edge of this housing towards you until it pops off at one side.
Now the end of the cable will be hanging down and you have to feel for it and flick it up towards you.
Now get the pliers onto the cable and give it a tug while pressing the upper tailgate with your head.
The lock will open and you can get out.
Remove your hand and apply the sticking plaster to the 5cm cut on your right hand.
As I said it takes less than 2 minutes from entry to exit.
From there it's a case of removing the bekleding and replacing the latch and cable.
PS ... if the garage tells you the have to cut the bekleding then they also probably will tell you you have to take the body off to do the timing belt.
