Ok, if it's a 3 speed (the shifter is a giveaway it has P, R, N, D, 2 and 1) then the young Padwan correctly identified it's a Torqueflite A727.
Now it's interesting that you have it mated to 300Tdi. With the V8 there is a linkage coming off the Left Hand throttle bank that controls the throttle valve on the gearbox and this is important for the gearbox to maintain the correct line pressures in all gears through the rev range. How is this attached on your vehicle ?
Now before I would recommend the diagnosis procedure have you checked the condition of the Gearbox Oil. Any metallic particles in the oil and you are looking at a rebuild at best, although the A727 is virtually bomb proof it really doesn't like bits of metal flying round the system especially the torque converter.
Now for Diagnosis the simplest one is checking the hydraulic pressures, these are detailed in the workshop manual supplement page 95 to 97. The complete overhaul procedure is detailed on pages 53 to 100.
Many of the parts are now no longer available from Land Rover or the usual suspects but the A727 is still alive and well in the USA. Expect to be paying around $250 to $500 for a new torque converter, the front clutch housing AEU2364 is around €200,00 ex BTW from a specialist. The clutch plates AEU2357 would be around €20 each for the front and AEU2386 for the rear are about €15,00 each
